[Interview] Yea Cobi’s Music Debut Teeming with Big Dreams

Hailing from sunny side Los Angeles, Greensboro native Yeah Cobi displays a passionate body of work on his debut beat tape, Walk Faster. The project consists of 12 tracks that embody Yeah Cobi’s personality and musical interests, with sounds fused with hip-hop, trap, and jazz. Each track conveys a sentiment that relates to its respective track title. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the NC native for a while now and can confirm that the progression he’s made as a producer has been impressive and inspiring.

I hopped on a FaceTime call with Yeah Cobi a while back to discuss his new body of work, and it developed into a conversation filled with passion and detailed insight. This project was a long time coming for the up-and-coming producer, and the way he spoke about his work displayed a deep passion for his craft. The producer added that he made this body of work with an innate understanding that he isn’t in the position that he wants to be in just yet. His two-year beat-making journey has been filled with ups and downs.

“I think I finally decided to drop a project when I was frustrated, ” said Yeah Cobi energetically.

It’s been about a year since he made a life-changing move from North Carolina to the mecca of entertainment. But Yeah Cobi is tenacious with his art, and his deep-seated need to release will stand against any obstacle. Cobi is a visionary, and his dreams are as big as his personality. And he’s got a sound unique to him. You can feel that sentiment in stand-out tracks like “where the frisbee lands,” ”jungle juice,” and “the hard acceptance.”

My personal favorite, “where the frisbee lands,” is a smooth syncopated journey made in an agreement for a lyricist. There’s movement and sound everywhere that keeps you engaged and an ominous tone that encourages a rapper to dispel only their truth.

As for a track like “jungle juice” the production cries as it disperses into an overall renewal within its spirit. As Cobi describes it, this track describes an inebriated being. “It’s another word for alcohol,” adds the producer. “I was in my head about everything, facing new realities. You get in your head when you’re drunk and I guess that’s when you start thinking about stuff. Coming back home to North Carolina, I just had to face new realities. I had to accept certain stuff for what they were.”

The seventh track on the album, “the hard acceptance,” shares the same poetic sense as “jungle juice.” A jazz-hip hop instrumental that is somber in sound and engaging in rhythm. You can hear Cobi’s deep musical sense on this track and his overall message. The North Carolina native added, “It’s hard to accept that I’m 21. It’s hard to accept that life has started.”

As a body of work, Walk Faster displays the inception of what’s in store from the up and coming producer. “Expect more R&B, jazz, alternative, and even Latin grooves.” Yeah Cobi is an eclectic soul that draws inspiration from Pharell, Tyler the Creator, Calvin Harris, Ye, Jon Key, and Jacob Collier; just to name a few. The future is bright for the North Carolina producer. His tenacity is contagious and motivating; attributes that are made for someone who’s going to make big moves in the music world.

Tune in to Walk Faster, available on all streaming platforms!
