Little Simz Tour Brings Empathetic Sharpness to Fillmore Silver Spring

Coming all the way from North London, Little Simz showed the DMV what American fans have been waiting on for years. Her beaming smile, quick-witted persona, and knack for tasteful drama had fans on their toes all night long.

Performing to a sold out crowd, Simz thanked her fans for sticking with her after her 2022 US tour was canceled due to financial stresses.

Little Simz did well to sprinkle in the old with the new, playing songs all the way back to her 2019 album GREY Area. On top of “Selfish,” she offered the playful “101 FM” before the menacing hit, “Venom.”

She established a vulnerable connection between herself and the crowd through personable moments throughout the show. Early on, she danced through the crowd while rapping “Two Worlds Apart.” And before the finale, “Woman,” she took photos with the first few rows of the audience.

She shared words of experience and wisdom between songs, shining a light on her creative process and personal philosophy.

“You should see my mother’s house in North London,” she said. “If there’s something you believe in that you have a love for I wanna encourage you to go for it.”

She went on to express the importance of being “careful who you tell your dreams to.”

Little Simz rapped a cappella for “Introvert,” the opener to 2021 album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (SIMBI).

“I bottle up and then spill it in verses / One day I’m wordless, next day I’m a wordsmith”

Bringing fans along on this emotional journey brought more power to the ensuing dancing and singing. Dancey tracks on SIMBI, including “Point and Kill,” “Fear No Man,” and “Protect My Energy,” resonated with the audience.

Especially loud choral sections substituted for Cleo Sol’s contributions to “Selfish,” “Who Even Cares,” and “Woman.”

The night was proof that Little Simz is an enduring and appropriate star for the moment. Her music is aesthetically varied, matching her complex personality. She’s incredibly skilled and carries a natural charisma. Little Simz is no act to miss.
